Meta-Portrait Series—Animals We Know and Love

A development from the meta-landscape series, each meta-portrait in this set is built from layers of output generated algorithmically utilizing selected text identifiers—the common names, and scientific species and family names of the species portrayed—as input. This work aims to reposition the audience with regard to what we know and don’t know about the living world and our efforts to understand it, while attempting to reinforce the metaphysical element that the landscape series sought to suppress. Elusive complexity remains the central theme, but here a more immediate dialog with the viewer consistent with the goals of traditional portraiture is sought. A dialog of pure existence, unfathomable depth, and moral force in the Anthropocene.
